Solo Leveling Review – Is it good ?? [ Manhwa Review 2021]

What is Solo Leveling?

Solo Leveling is a South Korean web novel ( Manwha/Webtoon ) written by Chugong. It was serialized in Kakao’s digital comic and fiction platform KakaoPage on July 25, 2016, and later published by D&C Media under their Papyrus label on November 4, 2016.

Solo Leveling Plot:

10 years ago, after “the Gate” that connected the real world with the monster world opened, some ordinary, everyday people received the power to hunt monsters within the Gate. They are known as “Hunters”. However, not all Hunters are powerful. My name is Sung Jin-Woo, an E-rank Hunter.

I’m someone who has to risk his life in the lowliest of dungeons, the “World’s Weakest”. Having no skills whatsoever to display, I barely earned the required money by fighting in low-leveled dungeons… at least until I found a hidden dungeon with the hardest difficulty within the D-rank dungeons! In the end, as I was accepting death, I suddenly received a strange power, a quest log that only I could see, a secret to leveling up that only I know about! If I trained following my quests and hunted monsters, my level would rise.

Changing from the weakest Hunter to the strongest S-rank Hunter!

solo leveling review 2022

  • Overall character design: 7/10
  • Art: 10/10
  • Story: 6/10.

While we say it is good or bad, Solo Leveling is still a Masterpiece for Art. The art style is very detailed and top-notch. The solo leveling review is going to be pretty confusing, but I’ll try to be very positive and short.

What people say, “it’s an awesome manhwa you should read it”, “it’s a masterpiece”, “it’s the first manhwa I’ve ever read that has a badass character”, Okay..okay… Hold on! Is this what you are also thinking?  I mean that’s right it has a badass character like the Plot says as well as very detailed Art.

If we talk about the storyline then I’m kinda disappointed in Solo leveling. Everything that the author wants to show us is badass like art, character, Mc’s world, or the environment around him but the problem I’m disappointed with is in the story of solo leveling.

It was a good start in 2019 when I started reading this manhwa like how he was the weakest hunter who barely earned the required money to pay his mother’s hospital bill and sister’s education bill then someday he got a chance to enter a D-rank dungeon where he supported who carried luggage and their equipment.

As we all know this dungeon was very difficult maybe we can call it an S-rank dungeon because that’s how that dungeon turned out to be. He is the last survivor of that dungeon who got a mysterious cheat power-like leveling system similar to the game we play RPG, where you level up by defeating monsters and completing quests and become powerful.

However, the story is progressing from time to time it’s getting bored and why it is getting bored is because they don’t have a deep story or give too much screen time to other characters like his family or other hunters, and what we all want is to have a deep story in every manhwa. It’s like “the weakest human being come and got the power of a God”.

People like to read manhwa where MC is badass but if MC already has GOD-like power then we all know what’s gonna happen next, right? He was just an E-rank hunter only for 10 chapters then he became an S-rank hunter after getting a cheat-like power.

The story simply follows Zero to Hero that we can find it anywhere, right? I really wanted to know his family and his friends. I don’t want a war in every episode where I already know the consequence.

In 2021, I must say that every chapter is like a war or it seems like a war, not even a slight bit of comedy. There is nothing new in upcoming chapters. Dude, I really wanted to see Jin-woo get more powerful but it seems like he has already become a GOD who can beat any monarch or highly ranked monsters from an S or an SS rank dungeon. I searched on Reddit a while ago about Solo leveling what people thought about it in 2021 and joined a few discussions. Here is the opinion of what people think about Solo leveling in terms of story,

“I tried my best but seriously I don’t think even Sherlock Holmes or Detective Conan can find the “Story” in this clusterfuck. People say that it’s not your usual isekai, it’s different and it’s a masterpiece.”

My interest in the story went from “Good” to “Not worth my time” at the same speed the protagonist went from “Weakest on the planet” to “Strongest on the planet”.

As you see two examples of people what they think about the Solo leveling manhwa after reading 100 or 50 chapters. The story was very perfect at the beginning but later on, MC has no development he remains an OP character or the strongest on the planet.

This review is my own opinion after reading this manhwa since 2019. Don’t take it negatively, Solo leveling is really Good and Entertaining. You won’t regret it after reading Solo leveling.

I’m still reading it weekly when the update comes. But I really wanted to see Jin-woo get more powerful and I hope this manhwa gives more screentime to other characters because it’s still going. This review might get changed in the future as we know manhwa isn’t ended yet.
